Walking the pristine ocean beach of the tiny tropical island, you revel in the feel of the wet sand beneath your feet. Sounds of surf and seabirds delight your ears as a gentle wind caresses your skin.

You savor life on this tiny sun-kissed island in the tropics, with fresh ocean breezes carrying the distant sound of live music in the air, bathtub-warm ocean surf the color of translucent turquoise, and powder white sand beaches beneath your bare toes – and decide you never want to leave again.

As you savor fresh cooked-to-order coconut-encrusted jumbo shrimp dipped in a sweet chili sauce, cilantro-infused pico de gallo, and creamy guacamole with crispy just-cooked tortilla chips, you realize that you can eat incredibly fresh healthy food like this every day to feel and look and act younger and healthier than you have felt in years.

And when you wake up each morning to brilliant sunshine streaming through the windows, the sound of the waves gently caressing the shore, and a sense of peace and serenity you’ve never experienced before… you realize that you want to live like this every day for the rest of your life

400

Just imagine - you can live richly in paradise for a fraction of what you are spending today.

During your week-long retreat, you will learn about the incredibly low cost of living you can expect just about everywhere in Mexico, where you can slash your cost of living generally by half or more.

You will learn about the excellent and incredibly affordable medical care you can get here – at about 10% of what it costs in the US.

And you will learn about immigration and visas, banking and mail, phone and internet services, transportation options and how to go about buying a car, golfcart or moto, and so much more.

You will discover that you don’t have to wait until you reach 65 and finally earn Social Security and Medicare to start living the life of your dreams. Instead, you will learn the options to work and earn a living in paradise, so you can move now, not years from now when you finally retire.

But more importantly, you will meet dozens of expats who are living right here in paradise, so you can learn from them, see their homes, ask questions about their jobs, and get a bird’s eye view of life in Mexico you will never gain anywhere else.

With all this valuable learning and experiences during your week in paradise, you will be able to make an informed decision whether or not this joy-filled life in the sunshine is right for you.

So tell me …is this you?

  • You yearn to move to Mexico, and live the life of your dreams now – not years from now.

  • You crave clarity in knowing exactly who you are, and what you want to do with your life, today and in the future.

  • You want to be able to make a good living while still living the life of your dreams.

  •  You seek the relief of knowing that you have enough money right now to move to your white sandy beach in paradise.

  • You dream of being able to use your gifts and talents to make more out of your life.

  • You want to feel more confident and bold and adventuresome, ready to take on exciting new challenges in life.

If you answered YES to three of these or more, then this retreat was made especially with YOU in mind... …because that’s exactly why you are going to LOVE the Runaway Retreat.

It’s seven days in paradise, experiencing living barefoot on the beach like an islander, getting the insider scoop into how to earn dollars, spend pesos, and live in paradise like royalty – on any budget.

You will explore the off-the-beaten-path treasures of Isla Mujeres, Mexico, a tiny sun-kissed island off the coast of Cancun.

You will savor fresh caught seafood, slurp icy margaritas while digging your toes into powder white sand, and swim and sun on one of the 9 best beaches of the world – according to Conde Nast - and recently voted the best beach in all of Mexico!

And you will learn if this life is right for you, and decide if you will give yourself the gift of joy and happiness you so rightly deserve.

We will start the day with a delicious fresh cooked breakfast
looking at the beach, before embarking on the day’s adventure to explore the secrets of this tiny idyllic island paradise.

And each afternoon or evening, you will delight in a sumptuous meal at a hand-selected favorite restaurant, beach club, or island home to savor the delicious freshly-prepared tropical delights served family style so you can sample a wide range of tasty island cuisines.

You will devour Tik in Xic, fresh caught whole local fish over a wood fire grill in the Mayan style, seasoned with achiote paste and fresh lime juice, accompanied by frozen margaritas in a blown glass goblet, while sitting right on the beach.

And you will love happy hour at El Patio, the House of Music, listening to local musicians sing while digging into fresh coconut shrimp, zesty pico de gallo, crunchy piled-high nachos with shredded chicken, savory cheese quesadillas, and fresh-prepared shrimp ceviche.

Every day you will enjoy either lunch or dinner at a fun and fabulous local eatery, known to the locals for their great food (no tourist traps for us) and reasonable prices, so you will know just how well you can dine on a shoestring budget when you live in paradise.

And our farewell dinner will be held at the Mayan Beach Club on Playa Norte, where you will watch the sun set over the Bay of Cancun, before reveling in the exquisite cuisine of one of the finest chefs serving breathtakingly beautiful local dishes right on the beach.

The Adventure…

Our morning will start at 9 am, with either water aerobics right on the beach at Playa Norte in incredibly beautiful crystal-clear water, or a group breakfast overlooking the beach with a special visitor who will share insights into life in paradise as an expat.

Then we will depart by golf cart or car for an island adventure, to explore the neighborhoods, stores, churches, and landmarks that make the island so special and livable for expats.

We will visit the ruins of the temple to the Mayan goddess Ixchel at Punta Sur, the most eastern point of all of Mexico, and the sacred healing place of the primary female diety of all Mayans. Locals and expats alike attest to the strong female healing energy the island exerts – you have to feel it to understand it.

And on another morning, we will sail on an all-glass boat to see coral reefs, boat wrecks, turtles, fish, and lots of underwater creatures.

You will be invited to visit the homes of other expats, to see what an island home can be like, and to learn about housing and utilities costs, and the kind of home you can enjoy on your budget here in paradise.

And don’t forget about shopping! You will have lots of opportunities to bring home treasures from this trip:

  • Guided tour through the Island’s major supermarket to stock up on missing items and to understand all that is available to buy locally.

  • Shop at the local Arts and Crafts Market to buy all your favorite beachwear, hats, sarongs, gifts, treasures, and more.

  • Shopping excursion at the Municipal Food Market where restauranteurs and local residents buy the freshest food for the day.

  • Visit to the Isla Mujeres Beading Cooperative to choose incredibly affordable amazing hand-made beaded jewelry. You can also order custom designs that will be ready before you depart

And every afternoon, we will visit a different beach club to get to know the many wonderful places the locals go to enjoy the bounty of life on this beautiful tropical island.

And later in the day, we will return to the hotel to rest, nap, swim in the beautiful pool, or socialize with others before heading off to dinner or visiting Hidalgo, the walking street of this quaint fishing village gone tourist mecca.

Immerse Yourself in The Local Culture…

Isleños love their local and national celebrations, and perhaps the most cherished Mexican tradition of all is the Day of the Dead.

In this 3-day celebration of life, Mexicans remember and fete their deceased loved ones, building altars in their homes and businesses with photos, mementos, and adorn them with favorite food and drink to entice the spirits of their family members to make the long journey back home to be with the living for just a few days.

The marigold is the flower of the dead, and you will see the golden flowers everywhere. Family members will clean, paint, and redecorate the crypts of their forefathers, lighting candles and leaving fresh flowers to bring joy to the departed souls making such a long journey for reunification.

Mexicans everywhere celebrate the Catrina, the image of a beautiful woman who is half alive and half a skeleton, as a commentary to the fleeting nature of life and the need to fully embrace it when you can.

This retreat is scheduled to coincide with the Day of the Dead celebrations, and we invite you to join in the festivities, both sacred and festive. Bring a glamorous gown to wear in the procession, and plan to have your face painted by Elba to fit in with the locals.

And bring a framed photo of your departed loved ones, to celebrate Mexican style with our own altar, to invite them back into your memories and celebrate their life and what they meant to you.

We are all healing from something in our lives, and this is one beautiful way to embrace the painful losses of our lives as an important step in moving forward toward finding joy in our new beginnings.

Flights

Plan to arrive into the Cancun International Airport (CUN) on Saturday, October 28th before 2 PM if possible so you can get to Isla and get settled in before dinner. We recommend you depart on Friday, November 3rd in the late morning or any time in the afternoon so you can schedule 2 – 3 hours to get to the airport. The first ferry leaves at 6 AM, so any flight before 9 AM is risky.

If you want to come earlier or stay later for some exploring – and we strongly encourage you to stay longer, perhaps through the weekend, or even for an extra week to check out life on your own in Isla. We can arrange extra nights at the hotel for $100 per night (single or double room). And if you’d like to stay for a week, we can help you book a small Airbnb or guesthouse in the residential colonies to get a real feel of Isla life as an expat.

Get to Know Isla Mujeres…

What can I say? I love Isla Mujeres. It is a tiny white sandy beach island just 4 miles long, and less than half a mile wide, situated 7 miles due east of Cancun, where the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico meet. It the most easternly point in all of Mexico, and thousands of locals flock to Punta Sur on New Year’s Day to watch the sunrise first touch the shores of Mexico over the ruins of the ancient Mayan temple to the goddess Ixchel.

Isla was inhabited by the Mayans more than 1,000 years ago, and the temple was already in ruins in 1509 when the Spaniards first landed on the island. The name Isla Mujeres means “Island of Women” named after the small carved statues and figurines brought from the mainland by female pilgrims who canoed across the Bay to petition Ixchel for healing, fertility, and love.

Isla has been continually inhabited since 1623, more than 300 years before Cancun was even established back in the 1980s. Today there are about 10,000 people who live on the island (no more than 1,000 of them expats), and about 20,000 tourists who visit on any given day. It is a small intimate community, with the look and feel of a quiet Mexican beach town, despite being considered one of the best tourist locations in the world.

Just a few years ago, Isla was a sleepy fishing village with sand streets and wooden shacks, but now is growing up to become one of Mexico’s rising star tourist meccas. It is famous for its breathtakingly beautiful Playa Norte, or North Beach, rated as one of the world’s best beaches by Conde Nast and Trip Advisor, and acclaimed as the best beach in all of Mexico. Come visit and you will see why!
